Autonomous Resonating Life on the Water and Resonating Trees - Dragonfly Lake

The ovoids of light standing on the surface of the Dragonfly Lake shine brightly together with the trees on the lakeshore. The light of the ovoids and the light of the trees are autonomous: they shine brightly and then fade slowly, as if breathing.

When an ovoid is pushed, the color of its light changes, and it emits a sound tone specific to that color. The light resonates out to the ovoids and trees nearby. The sound tone resonates out continuously in the same way as the light, spreading throughout the ovoids and trees.

When a light resonates from the other side, it signifies the presence of people or local animals. Perhaps people will become more aware of the existence of other living things in the same space.

Flowers and People - Giant Lattice Mass, A Whole Year per Hour

Flowers bloom and scatter for eternity on a giant latticed (15m high, 38m wide). A year of seasonal flowers bloom over the course of an hour, continuously scattering and changing.Flowers are born, grow, bud, bloom, and eventually scatter, wither, and disappear. The flowers are in a continuous cycle of life and death, repeating forever.
When people come close and move around, the flowers scatter. But when people approach and remain still, the flowers bloom more abundantly than usual.
The artwork is not a pre-recorded image that is played back: it is created by a computer program that continuously renders the work in real time. The interaction between people and the installation causes continuous change in the artwork: previous visual states can never be replicated, and will never reoccur. The picture at this moment can never be seen again.

Message Pillar - The Singapore Bicentennial

If you look at the pole of the Message Pillar through your smartphone camera using the Message Pillar smartphone app, you will see words floating around the pillar. If you use the app to write and post a wish, that wish will float together with the other previously-posted wishes and join them to form a tree.

Animals of Flowers, Symbiotic Lives II

Animals with flowers growing on their bodies come and go.The flowers grow from the bodies of the animals, bloom, and in time, their petals scatter, wither and die. The cycle of life and death continues for eternity.When people touch the animals, the flower petals scatter. If people touch the animals too much, all of the flowers will scatter, and the animals will die and fade away.
Animals inhabiting Singapore and the surrounding area bloom with flowers, including local Singapore orchids.

Continuous Life and Death at the Now of Eternity II

The eternally continuous life and death of flowers connects to the eternal now.
The world of the artwork is in the same flow of time in which we live. It grows brighter with the sunrise of this location and darker with the sunset. And, in accordance with the changing of the seasons, the blooming flowers slowly change.
The real time in which the viewer exists and the time in which the flowers change as they go through cycles of life and death are connected to this place and the world of the artwork, continuing and overlapping without being separated.
This pictorial world drawn through Ultrasubjective Space does not split the world of the artwork and the space the viewer is in, with the screen acting as a boundary. The world of the artwork is continuously connected to the space in which the viewer’s body exists, and the viewer, while retaining free bodily movement, walks inside this space where different times intersect in the same place.
The artwork continues to be drawn in real time, and continuously changes eternally, without the previous state being replicated as a whole. The picture at this moment can never be seen again.
The repeated life and death of the flowers in front of our eyes will continue into the future, while remaining connected to the now of this location. When we feel that continuity within the eternal now, we realize that life and death has continued from the distant past to the present, and that our existence stands upon that continuity.

EN TEA HOUSE

Flowers Bloom in an Infinite Universe inside a Teacup

When a cup of tea is made, flowers bloom inside the teacup. When the teacup is lifted, the flower petals scatter and spread outside of the cup. Flowers bloom infinitely as long as there is tea. The tea in the teacup becomes an infinite world in which the flowers continue to bloom. Drink in the infinitely expanding world.
Tea is a transformative entity, and the size of the flowers that bloom will change depending on the amount of tea. The artwork is born only when there is tea. Once the tea is drunk, the work no longer exists.
The flowers blooming in the teacup change with the passage of real time.
The artwork is forever changing and the picture at this moment can never be seen again.

Enso - Gold Light

Enso is the Zen practice of drawing a circle with a single brushstroke. This artwork depicts enso drawn as Spatial Calligraphy. The brushstroke is suspended in space, but there are moments when its circular shape is revealed as the brushstroke rotates and shifts the viewpoint.
Spatial Calligraphy is a form of calligraphy drawn in space that teamLab has been exploring since it was founded. The artwork reconstructs calligraphy in three-dimensional space to express the depth, speed, and power of the brushstroke, and that calligraphy is then flattened using the logical structure of space that teamLab calls Ultrasubjective Space. The calligraphy shifts between two and three dimensions.
Back in ancient times, enso was drawn in space using sticks, to symbolize the concepts of enlightenment, truth, the universe, and equality, in a figurative manner. The circle is also a reflection of the viewer’s inner self, thus its interpretation depends on the viewer.

Reversible Rotation - Black in White

The Spatial Calligraphy in this artwork space rotates in the same direction, but because of the characteristics of Ultrasubjective Space, visually, the clockwise and counterclockwise rotation are logically equivalent. Hence, the work can appear to be rotating in either direction depending on how the viewer chooses to look at it.

teamLab (f. 2001) is an international art collective. Their collaborative practice seeks to navigate the confluence of art, science, technology, and the natural world. Through art, the interdisciplinary group of specialists, including artists, programmers, engineers, CG animators, mathematicians, and architects, aims to explore the relationship between the self and the world, and new forms of perception.
